First time when I heard we should not trust the emotions when we pray or for that matter in anything we do as Christians was when I talked with Fr. Meletios Webber ( for those who know me I'm a big fan of Fr. Mel and Bishop Kallistos Ware).

It was very confusing at first because I thought everything I am is the emotions and the thoughts but as I found out "the center of our being" the heart is beyond our thoughts and emotions. God is beyond emotions and thoughts.

Also yesterday I've heard the same thing during the homily that we should not wait for our emotions to tell us to do a good thing. For example if you are upset with someone you should not wait until you "feel like" forgiving that person but instead we should just forgive that person anyway even though our emotions tell us otherwise. Forgiving is a decision not an emotion.

This brings us to another important subject and that's love. Love I thought for a long time is an emotion but in fact is a decision we take.

I've head this example many times and it might make more sense for those who are married and have kids. When you have to change the diapers in the middle of the night you usually don't have that love emotion and you don't know how to get faster back to bed but you still take the decision to change those diapers even though you don't feel like.

As Fr. David said yesterday the result was the same even though you had the emotions behind it or not. Actually most of the times when you do something good is not convenient and that's probably the cross our Lord Jesus Christ tels us to embrace on everything we do.
